DJI Mavic 2 Zoom Drone
We all know who DJI is. DJI has been producing one of the best and highest quality drones and is a well-known leader in the industry.
So it probably comes as no surprise that they are going to be dominating this list.
The DJI Mavic 2 Zoom Drone is one of their top models that many people may overlook. However, the camera of this drone can deliver one of the most stunning and creative looking videos you can expect to see.
The camera can capture high-quality and highly-detailed 4K videos. But the good things don’t end here.
The Mavic 2 Zoom is capable of taking HDR photos and videos. The additional capabilities of shooting a hyper-lapse, and even creating a dolly zoom effect give a lot of creative freedom that can make any wedding footage outstanding. And the adjustable aperture will provide high-quality videos and photos, even in those low-light moments.
At the same time, the 3-axis gimbal will keep your footage incredibly smooth and shake-free.
The drone comes with one of the longest-lasting batteries – as a result, it can be flown for up to 31 minutes on a single battery charge.
You will not have to worry about the drone flying into objects and crashing as it comes with an omnidirectional obstacle sensing capability. It can create a 3D map of its surroundings in order to avoid any obstacles. And it can do that while at the same time tracks and follows specific people or objects.
The design of the drone is also making it very quiet, which is a significant advantage, especially if you do not want to disturb everyone attending the wedding, including the bride and the groom.
If you need a drone for shooting a wedding, you can’t go wrong with this one.
DJI Phantom 4 PRO
The Phantom 4 drones from DJI have left their mark in history as one of the best drone product lines on the market.
First things first, the battery life-time is one of the best you can find on a drone today – it lasts for up to 30 minutes depending on the weather conditions.
This model is capable of capturing stunning videos in 4K at 60 FPS. You will also be able to shoot 20 MP photos in DNG RAW format. And the variable aperture makes this drone useful even in shooting in low light conditions.
The camera is attached to a 3-axis gimbal, which will prevent any shakes and jitteriness from occurring, giving you the smoothest possible videos and photos.
The controller features a built-in display that you can use so you will not need an additional smart device.
One of the neat features of this drone is that it can be used to follow a person with the ActiveTrack mode. This is a feature that can be incredibly useful when shooting a wedding.
The drone has a total of 5 obstacle sensors, which make it very safe to fly and maneuver. It is also able to follow established waypoints while maintaining the same height.
Overall this is one excellent drone that excels in almost every aspect.
DJI Mavic Pro Combo
If you are looking for the whole package deal that includes not just a drone but everything else you need to start flying right away, then the DJI Mavic Pro bundle offers one of the best bangs for the buck.
With this bundle, you get extra propellers, a charging hub, cart charger, a power bank, shoulder bag, but what I really like is that you also get two extra batteries (three in total).
All the other accessories are great, like the bag that makes carrying the drone easy, but having extra batteries and a charging hub means that you will have the necessary battery power to back you up during these long video shoots.
While with other models, you may need to buy one, two, even three extra batteries (because they are usually sold with only one) here, you already have two additional batteries.
Just like the Mavic 2 Zoom, the Mavic Pro also features the ActiveTrack technology, which will allow it to follow the people of interest.
The camera is capable of capturing stunning 4K video and high-resolution photos. The videos will be super smooth and shake-free thanks to the 3-axis gimbal, which provides the needed stability.
Parrot Anafi Drone
The Parrot Anafi is one of the best lightweight drones that can be used for shooting a wedding.
The camera on this drone can capture high-quality videos in 4K and take high-resolution photos. There are also other neat features like dolly effect, hyper-lapse and slow motion, and so much more. The drone is even capable of tracking and following people.
The camera is mounted on a 3-axis gimbal, which will keep your videos and photos smooth and clear.
The Parrot Anafi packs some neat safety features too. If the battery gets too low or you lose signal with the drone, it is capable of automatically returning back to the lift-off area. You can establish a geofence area to make sure the drone will not fly off too far or in areas where you don’t want it to be.
DJI Mavic Pro Platinum Combo
This drone from DJI offers one of the best values for the money.
The high-quality camera is capable of shooting excellent 4K videos and photos. The camera is mounted on a 3-axis gimbal, which will keep the video footage smooth and steady at all times.
One of the best features of this drone that makes it perfectly suitable for shooting a wedding is the fact that it is one of the quietest drones out there. And in side-by-side testing, the Mavic Pro Platinum proves to be significantly quieter than comparable models.
A quieter drone is a good thing as it will be interfering with the wedding as little as possible.
This combo from DJI includes everything you need to start flying your drone right away, including extra batteries, a shoulder bag, an SD memory card, a case for the drone, and so much more.
For the price, it sells at it is a steal.
What to Look for in a Drone for Wedding Shoots
The wedding is one of the most magical and special moments in anyone’s life. Tons of preparations have been done with the single purpose of providing the best experience for everyone.
Naturally, everyone would want to have their wedding captured on video. And it goes without saying, the video and the photos all need to be of the best quality possible.
This is why when choosing a drone for shooting a wedding, you need to make sure it is able to deliver videos of the highest quality possible.
This is why one of the best drones in this category are the ones that can capture 4K video at 30 to 60 FPS. The higher fPS can add extra smoothness to the captured video.
An additional feature I would consider almost a must-have, which can add a little extra oomph, is the ability to capture high-resolution slow-motion videos, dolly zooms, hyperlapse, and more.
Even the best quality camera in the world would not be of any help if the footage were extremely shaky and wobbly.
A 3-axis gimbal delivers the best stabilization as it provides stabilization in all three planes – the yaw, the pitch, and the roll.
The 2-axis gimbal is also able to provide decent amounts of stabilization but are a little lacking when it comes to the horizontal movements.
For a real-life side by side comparison of no stabilization vs. 3-axis stabilization vs. 2-axis stabilization, check this great video below.
Long Battery Life
One of the biggest problems drones have is their limited flight time, which will be the biggest concern when it comes to shooting a wedding.
High-quality drones typically have between 20 to 30 minutes of flight time. However, weddings do not last only 30 minutes, and this is where some preliminary planning and preparations will have to be made.
In most cases, unless you want to have just a short 20 to 30-minute video, you will need to have multiple batteries handy; the number of batteries you would need can vary, but generally, we are speaking about at least 2 to 3 extra batteries (so 3-4 in total).
Here’s the thing.
We already know that drones last about 20 to 30 minutes max.
To fully recharge your battery, though, you will need between 50 and 210 minutes depending on what drone you are using. This means that you would need to rotate several batteries – drain the battery, then fully charge it, and use it again.
Ideally, you want a drone that has long flight time coupled with a fast-charging battery.
The transmission range of your drone is going to affect the total area and distance you can cover. Depending on the type of wedding, location, and the events that will be carried out, you may need a drone that can cover longer distances.
The Noise Levels
Drones can be very noisy, and it doesn’t really matter if you use them indoors or outdoors. Capturing the wedding footage with a loud drone can prove to be very annoying and disruptive to everyone, including the wedding couple.
Some of the drones can sound as if you are flying a small electric chainsaw.
This is why you really want to go with a drone that is as quiet as possible, especially if you will be filming throughout the whole wedding.
Additional Safety Features
Since you will be operating your drone in areas where there may be multiple obstacles and people, you also will need some safety features.
Consider using a drone that has built-in GPS, automated take-off and landing capabilities, smart obstacle sensing, geo barrier, increased stability, and ability to follow waypoints.
Every additional safety feature matters, especially when filming such an important event.
Can You Use a Drone for a Wedding Shoot?
Wedding shoots are a tricky thing to do with a drone because there are some laws and regulations that you need to follow.
First, if you are using your drone commercially, you need to pass a part 107 certification.
But even then, there are some limitations that you need to follow. The general rule of thumb is not to fly drones in close proximity and above crowds and other people. This can be extremely dangerous if the drone crashes as it can injure people.
With that being said, there is some information that the FAA is considering easing up the regulations, and it may potentially allow certified drone pilots to fly drones overcrowded areas.
However, until that is a fact, extra caution and consideration of others should be exercised.
Some venues may require you to have good UAV liability insurance in case something goes wrong.
The next thing that you need to consider is the weather conditions and the environment. High winds, the occasional showers, and the fact that there will be different obstacles in the way can make shooting a wedding with a drone dangerous and unsafe.
Follow your local regulations and laws. Make sure always to stay informed as the fines and the potential prosecution are not worth it.
